About laboratory

The Controlled Drives Laboratory is located in room BS24 on the first basement level of the TUKE Main Building. It is a specialized laboratory focused on the following areas: practical work with commercial frequency converters for electric drives; teaching and research in the modeling and control of technological components of production lines; and research into controller design using the Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) approach, with particular emphasis on sensorless control and predictive control methods.

Subjects and learning outcomes

Bachelor’s Studies:

  • Controlled Drives (development of block diagrams of electric drives and technological systems; design and simulation of controllers for basic drive types; introduction to various types of electric drives used in industry and the principles of their configuration and control).
  • Bachelor’s Project
  • Bachelor’s Thesis

Master’s Studies:

  • Electromechanical Production Systems (main components of commercial electric drives and applications of electric drives in industry; principles of control of continuous production lines and their subsystems; overview of industrial converters for DC and AC drives; diagnostics, parameterization, supervisory process control systems, communication between drives and PLCs, and implementation of all required settings).
  • Servo Systems (design of torque, speed, and position control structures for servo drives; design of linear state-space controllers for electric drives; observer design; discrete drive control; principles and implementation of feedforward control; various types of position and speed sensors for drive systems).
  • Master’s Project 1
  • Master’s Project 2
  • Master’s Thesis

Doctoral Studies:

  • Servo Systems (applications of converters in servo systems; selected topics in control theory; electromechanical systems, their continuous and discrete descriptions and models; multi-motor drives and servo systems (modeling, analysis, and methods for the design of process controllers); control of technological complexes (control system architectures and software, visualization tools, control safety, and redundancy)).
  • Scientific Research Activity 1–5 (ability to independently conceive, design, implement, and modify a substantial part of research with scientific integrity, contributing original research that expands the boundaries of scientific knowledge through the realization of a comprehensive body of work, some of which is worthy of peer-reviewed publication. Achievement of original scientific results acceptable at the international level. Based on the conducted scientific research, the graduate is regarded as an expert in their field.)

Laboratory equipment

  • Design, parameterization, and implementation tools for DC and AC drive control systems from Siemens,
  • Commercial drive converters: 2 × Sinamics S120, Simotion D442, Sinamics G120, ABB soft starter, Simoreg 6RA70, Simovert 6SE70 Master Drive and Motion Control,
  • 3 induction motors,
  • 8 permanent‑magnet synchronous motors equipped with position sensors,
  • A unique physical model of a continuous production line with commercial drive converters, an S7‑400 PLC, visualization system, and FM485 and CP 443‑1 technology modules,
  • 6 portable training stations equipped with S7‑1200 PLCs and HMI panels,
  • An OP5600 real‑time computing system for rapid control prototyping and hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulations with RT‑LAB software from OPAL‑RT,
  • 2 workstations equipped with measurement cards from Humusoft: MF624 and MF634,
