Recommended Semester of Study

2nd Level of Study, 2nd Year, Winter Semester

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire knowledge of the applications of electric drives in industry, particularly in the control of continuous production lines and their individual subsystems across various industrial sectors. They will also gain knowledge of industrial converters for DC and AC drives, their diagnostics, supervisory process control systems, and communication between drives and PLCs. During laboratory exercises, students will learn how to parameterize industrial converters and program their control and communication via PLCs. They will also learn how to design control systems for components of production lines, including the necessary engineering calculations. The course includes field trips to manufacturing facilities, where students will gain practical insight into the implementation and operation of electrical engineering systems in industry. Upon completion of the course, students will possess comprehensive knowledge of industrial applications of electric drives, particularly regarding their selection, parameterization, communication with PLCs, and diagnostics.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Basic characteristics of commercial converters for DC and AC drives.
  2. Control of basic subsystems of production lines: strip tension and thickness control, strip centering, control of uncoilers and coilers, flying shears and rotary shears control, etc.
  3. Typical industrial drive applications: control of cranes, conveyors, pumps and fans, rolling mills, slitting lines, and similar systems.
  4. Design and calculation of control systems for the above-mentioned subsystems, simulation-based analysis of process variable control, and practical exercises using a physical laboratory model of a continuous production line.
  5. Practical exercises in parameterization of converters for DC and AC drives and their integration with PLC systems.
