Recommended Semester of Study

1st Level of Study, 2nd Year, Winter Semester

Learning Outcomes

Ability to perform and evaluate basic measurements on electrical machines. Ability to carry out basic calculations of electrical machine characteristics. Acquisition of fundamental theoretical knowledge of the properties, construction, and applications of individual types of electrical machines. Use of the MATLAB mathematical environment for calculations of electrical and mechanical quantities related to electrical machines.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Transformers: operating principle, equivalent circuit, efficiency, three-phase transformers, parallel operation, special transformers.
  2. Evaluation of measurements on a three-phase transformer; calculation of efficiency, voltage drop, and electrical quantities for different types of loads. Measurement of the clock number (vector group) of three-phase transformers (MATLAB).
  3. Properties of AC machines, rotating magnetic field, windings, induced voltage, and torque of AC machines.
  4. Synchronous machines: construction, equivalent circuit, synchronization, synchronous compensator, synchronous motors.
  5. Measurement of equivalent-circuit parameters, connection to the power grid, calculations of electrical and mechanical quantities of a turbogenerator and a synchronous motor (MATLAB).
  6. Induction machines: construction, equivalent circuit, efficiency, torque characteristic, speed control, single-phase induction motor.
  7. Measurement of equivalent-circuit parameters, evaluation of torque characteristics, problem solving, loading conditions, speed control, and efficiency (MATLAB).
  8. DC machines: construction, armature reaction, commutation, generators, and motors.
  9. Measurement of control characteristics of a separately excited DC motor, efficiency evaluation, problem solving for separately excited and series motors, speed control (MATLAB).
  10. Special electrical machines: reluctance, stepper, and universal motors.
