Learning Outcomes

The course provides students with an overview of the types and characteristics of electrical machines, with particular emphasis on special designs of conventional electrical machines and machine types that are not covered in the introductory course. Laboratory exercises focus on comparing measurement results obtained from DC and induction machines with their models developed in MATLAB/Simulink, performing basic magnetic circuit calculations, and conducting measurements on linear machines and synchronous reluctance machines. Students will learn to analyze experimental data and model electromechanical systems. The course provides comprehensive knowledge that will be applied in subsequent specialized courses in power electrical engineering and will help students better understand interdisciplinary relationships among technical subjects.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Fundamental relationships governing magnetic circuits.
  2. Fundamental relationships among volume, power, and rotational speed.
  3. DC machines – review, design features, and commutation.
  4. Induction machines – review and design features.
  5. Single-phase induction motors.
  6. Synchronous machines – review and design features.
  7. BLDC motors.
  8. Commutator motors.
  9. Reluctance motors.
  10. Stepper motors.
  11. Toothed generators.
  12. Piezoelectric motors.
