Learning Outcomes

The course enables students to develop block diagrams of electric drives and simple technological systems, design controllers for basic types of drives, and verify their performance through simulation. Students will become familiar with the types of electric drives most commonly used in industry, as well as with the principles of their configuration and control. The course provides a foundation for subsequent courses in the fields of servo drive control and robotics.

Brief Course Outline

  1. Cascade control structure, compensation of large time constants, steady-state accuracy, and controller design methods.
  2. Speed-controlled DC drives with a cascade control structure: control structure and block diagrams, controller synthesis in the frequency domain, simulation analysis of current (torque) and speed control, and experimental controller tuning.
  3. Scalar and vector control of induction motors: control structure and block diagrams, coordinate transformations, controller synthesis and simulation analysis of torque and speed control performance, and experimental controller tuning.
  4. Sensorless speed control structures.
  5. Direct torque control of an induction motor.
  6. Vector control of a synchronous motor.
  7. BLDC motor control.
  8. Design of discrete controllers for electric drives.
